RESCUE

I bet you don't remember

that when we started we crawled very slow

The reaches opened before us and closed behind,

barring the way for our return.

We penetrated deeper and deeper

at the cost of our lives and souls,

changing us forever

chaining us together as wanderers who would

not look at each other,

pretending we didn't realize.

We traded our lives

or some parts of them

and didn't know

but wouldn't escape each other until far too late

to be rescued by anyone else.

With acknowledgement to Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.
